Consider giving back by volunteering

Towards the end 2017 I decided to leave my job as i could no longer deal with the  lack of direction and imbalance of workflows at the company where I had working for the past 12 years.

Taking time-out is wonderful thing, if you are able to, it gives you the time to reflect and recharge, but most of all think about what next.

Though I already had been volunteering for a charity, I decided that I had time to give to other volunteer work – give back my experience, and direct my energy towards others – a highly rewarding and fulfilling experience, that in some instances leaves a lasting impression.

In your community there are many ways in which to volunteer, and these opportunities can be followed on Local Authority websites, noticeboards and community notifications  as well in public arenas and media.  In addition there are several websites that provide useful information about volunteering, and current opportunities.

As an example, just type in volunteer…..

The Do-It.org  Website – is an easy to use site.  just enter your postcode and see what is available.

For me,  I saw a Sunday morning TV news article about befriending and followed it up.  I am now a qualified volunteer welfare caseworker having undertaken training for certification award, and since the Mental Health First Aid Course (MHFA). I enjoy every minute immensely and meet some very interesting people who have many their own problems ie from being homeless, to long term sickness, or just temporarily in a difficult financial position.  being able to support and help them through the organisation is most satisfying , and at times humbling – I hope some one is there for me should I ever need help.

So don’t stand back if you have spare hour or two, think about helping others in our community.  Don’t necessarily look for a position , ask an organisation about what you can do.  In the 21st century, we are all busy most of the time, so even think about event-based volunteering, therefore not obligating yourself to long-term commitment. The spectrum of volunteer work is vast, it does take commitment, but you will be truly rewarded.
